Packing Technology

MTAB’s Packing Technology Department produces crates of museum quality for the transport and storage of artworks. Many of the jobs involve inspecting the objects in situ, for example as part of an exhibition, before building the crates in the workshop. The objects are then packed and the crates sealed on site.

Packing Technology

The frames of the crate are manufactured in plywood and the corners, lid and back are reinforced with extra plywood. This provides maximum protection against impact and the weight is distributed optimally without the crate bursting. Each crate is coated with neopolene plastic. Then there are different procedures depending on the object to be transported: oil paintings, photos/graphics, ceramics or glass.

Certified packaging

MTAB is certified by the Swedish Board of Agriculture for the manufacture of wooden packaging in accordance with the International Standard – ISPM15. The EU will be incorporating the new standard for wooden packaging in its common import regulations. A minimum requirement is that the wood is to be heat-treated so that the core reaches 56°C for at least 30 minutes to ensure the removal of any pests.

Contact the Packing Technology Department if you would like to find out more about packaging materials and how we pack and transport different works of art.
